China’s Internet obsession

Just how big (or small) a market would Google leave behind were it to pull out of China today? In January, China Internet Network Information Center, the country’s official domain registry and research organization, reported that by the end of 2009, the number of Internet users in China had touched 384 million, more than the entire population of the United States. That’s an increase of around 50 percent over 2008. Moreover, 233 million Chinese—twice as many as in the previous year—accessed the Net on handheld devices, partly because China’s cellular providers started offering 3G services widely last year.

The Chinese are obsessed with the Internet. People in the 60 largest cities in China spend around 70 percent of their leisure time on the Internet, according to a survey we conducted in 2009. In smaller towns, the corresponding number is 50 percent. The PC is fast replacing the TV set as an entertainment hub, and emotions run high over who gets to log on and for how long. In a small city in northwest China, for instance, a man told one of us that domestic squabbles over using the PC got so out of hand that his wife and he discussed spending, for them, a large sum of money to buy another machine—or filing for divorce. They eventually bought a second PC and saved their marriage.

People in China use the Internet more for entertainment—playing online games, messaging, downloading music and movies, and shopping—than for work. The Chinese place great stock in the opinions of online product reviewers. One in five consumers between the ages of 18 and 44 won’t purchase a product or service without first researching it on the Internet. They shop online at auction Web sites such as Taobao, paying for products and services with prepaid Taobao cards that the post offices sell for a small commission. The volume of e-commerce in China more than doubled last year.

Unsurprisingly, both Chinese and foreign consumer-facing companies are pouring money into Internet marketing. Online advertising has been growing at between 20 and 30 percent a year—twice the print media’s growth rate—and the market was around $3 billion (20 billion renminbi) in size last year.

Companies that create microsites or stage online events usually find that consumers in China respond enthusiastically by posting comments, pictures, and videos. For instance, Nokia staged an online concert in partnership with Youku, a leading video content site, and tied up with Tudou, another online video site, to conduct a quiz that gave visitors a chance to win 1 million renminbi. In both cases, millions of users accessed the content over Nokia handhelds. Recently, Nestlé launched an online campaign for Nescafé coffee in association with Youku and Kaixin, a social-networking site. The Swiss multinational is showcasing Camera Café, five-minute videos of conversations between office workers on coffee breaks.

Marketers woke up to the Internet’s ability to influence opinion after the Sichuan earthquake, in May 2008. A huge amount of buzz glorified big donors and crucified small ones. In fact, Wanglaoji, an herbal tea brand, became nationally known partly because of its postquake online tag line: “If you want to donate, you donate 100 million renmibi. If you want to drink, you drink Wanglaoji.”

Many companies track online conversations in China constantly, asking themselves: What are bloggers saying about our company and products? Are we generating positive buzz online? How can we preempt an attack that can spread throughout the blogosphere in hours? They use agencies like CIC, the Chinese Web Union, and Daqi.com to track the buzz and to connect disgruntled customers with companies.1 This can be contentious; some agencies are accused of seeding fake comments, but many claim that they follow the US Word of Mouth Marketing Association’s code of ethics. Foreign companies invite influential Chinese bloggers to visit offices and plants overseas, while other companies take part in conversations on bulletin boards to dispel rumors and address concerns even as they gather consumer insights.

Seismic changes are likely to take place in the Chinese consumer market because of the Internet—and we aren’t talking just about the fact that 50 million Chinese may soon have to stop using their favorite search engine, Google.

AsiaPay: The Only Philippine e-Commerce Payment Provider to Achieve the Highest Compliance Certification

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

In the world of online convenience, nothing can be more preferable than electronic payment or e-payment when one is dealing with payment options. With e-payments, there is no need to be physically there to swipe a credit or debit card, write a check, or pay directly with paper currencies. All you need is a web browser, entering secured information into a payment gateway and an additional click of the mouse. This feature makes consumers turn their heads this way and avail of the convenience provided by e-payments. However, the main drawbacks to e-payments are the possibilities of infringement of privacy and identity theft. To protect both consumers and merchants from these unscrupulous entities, safeguards have been developed that will secure and safeguard customers’ vital personal information. Merchants, businesses and charitable institutions planning to have an online payment gateway on their own websites should go for an e-commerce payment provider that is proven to comply with the highest standards in online security. And the leading e-payment gateway provider in Asia and the Philippines that provides these services is AsiaPay.

Fig.1:  AsiaPay’s PayDollar and PesoPay services provides top-of-the line online payment security

AsiaPay paves the way in providing safe and secure electronic real-time payment processing services for credit cards or debit cards for merchants, banks, corporations and non-profit institutions in Asia, and now in the Philippines. AsiaPay has continuously been compliant with PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry - Data Security Standard) requirements and is consistent in providing comprehensive and secure e-payment facilities that meets the rigors of this international security standard. In a Payment Card Interface system, the most sensitive part is during the transmittal of information. These standards sets and implements the rules and best practices in securely capturing vital information from the customer through the payment card interface and protect this information from identity theft and fraud. Figure 2 below is a snapshot from the PCI-DSS registry of certified service providers from Visa showcasing AsiaPay as one of 46 international payment providers that meets the standards. Each company is assessed by an Independent Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) using onsite review standards provided by PCI-DSS.

Fig.2:  AsiaPay’s PayDollar and PesoPay services provides top-of-the line online payment security

AsiaPay features the PayAlert security system that provides advanced protection for our merchants and their customers against fraudulent or suspicious transactions. PayAlert is a real-time monitoring tool analyzes transactions for fraud patterns which include the questionable origin of transactions, invalid attempts, velocity checks and other patterns. This alerts the merchant’s business on these suspicious transactions via real-time reporting so appropriate verification or cancellation actions can be performed.

These features make AsiaPay the prime choice as accredited TPP (Third-Party Processor) for banks, certified IPSP (Internet Payment Processing Solution) for merchants, a certified 3D-Secure vendor for Visa, MasterCard and JCB. 3D-Secure is an added layer of security for online transactions of credit cards and/or debit cards developed by Visa to beef up the security for e-payments. The 3D-Secure protocol is offered by Visa as the Verified by Visa service, but was also adopted by MasterCard under SecureCode services and JCB International as J/Secure. 3D-Secure is different from the Card Security Code or the Card Verification Value Code (CVV) which is a short 3 or 4-digit numeric security code printed at the back of the card which is separate from the actual card number. This number provides the proper assessment that the person entering credit card information into an e-payment system physically holds the card.

AsiaPay is also an accredited payment partner for PayPal, AliPay and MasterCard. This partnership with these financial institutions enables merchants to receive customers using various payment methods that are available to them. This would make it more convenient for customers to make safe and secure online payments with the assurance that their credit card and other vital information is kept secure and protected from theft even at the most sophisticated levels.

AsiaPay: Your One Stop Shop for Everything “e” in Asia

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

There is so much buzz around the world about the Stimulus Package the new American President Barack Obama pushed for which the House ratified as a new Bill. Still, it is not a clear assurance that the US economy will bounce back immediately after implementation, but it does signal a start for a new round of hope for this nation and its impact across the globe. Experts say that 2009 would still be a very difficult year as every nation work ceaselessly to lift themselves up from the economic quagmire we are all in.

In the wake of these efforts, retailers and service providers scramble to get a hold of a much difficult market, using innovative and well-planned strategies to get new customers rolling in while maintaining existing ones. This year promises to be very challenging for the industry, for both offline and online retail and services, as strategies they used in the past may not work well in this new consumer environment.

Asian industries are well aware of this scenario and would do everything they can to keep up with the rest of the world. Part of these strategies is beefing up their e-commerce structure, as consumers begin to flock to online services clearly affected by the flood of TV and media hype from the West bombarding global airwaves. However, this hype is well founded on solid figures from western industries engaging in e-commerce and e-marketing. With online retail sales reaching up to 33.7 percent growth with online retail sales reaching figures in hundreds of billions of dollars, e-commerce is a strong force to reckon with on a global scale.

For Asian industries and merchants, whatever size of an enterprise they may be, are grateful for the emergence of the Internet in helping catapult their businesses into the global market. However, these merchants were faced with the difficulty of setting up a safe, secure and reliable online payment gateway to accommodate clients from around the world. This difficulty was considerable that most merchants forego going online with their products and services. In a similar note, several charitable and non-profit organizations have been looking for a reliable gateway to receive donations in various monetary currencies locally and across the globe but were faced with the same difficulty as merchants did.

Fig.1 Map showing AsiaPay’s regional presence in the whole of Asia

It is for this aspect in globalization that AsiaPay, the leading e-Payment service provider in Asia, has developed innovative products and solutions to cater for the online payment processing needs of both charitable and merchant institutions. Through AsiaPay’s e-Payment facilities, these enterprises are now able to receive mail, phone or Internet orders while accepting secure credit card or debit card from anywhere in the world. Figure1 above shows a map of AsiaPay’s growing regional presence in Asia.

AsiaPay’s advanced multi-currency and multi-channel payment gateway provides merchants, banks and institutions with a solution platform that includes an advanced payment authentication system, real-time fraud alert control and prevention technologies and a multi-currency conversion service. This is part of AsiaPay’s commitment of giving quality and value in its relationship and collaboration with business partners through synergizing and exploring business opportunities in order to achieve greater success in this very challenging market atmosphere.

Fig.2 AsiaPay’s strategic alliance with major banks and financial institutions

Figure 2 above shows AsiaPay’s strategic alliance with leading banks and financial institutions in Asia that would provide a comprehensive and convenient payment processing services and solutions for merchants and other institutions. This alliance allows AsiaPay and the merchant to accommodate whatever payment system the customer is using (i.e. traditional credit cards, debit cards, online payments, etc) and at the same time accommodating the customer’s preferred currency of payment. A classic example is the integration of PayDollar, AsiaPay’s innovative online payment service, with China’s UnionPay and AliPay payment platforms to allow merchants to accept secured payments from customers in Hong Kong and China using their existing debit cards from these payments platforms.

In its commitment to provide continuing excellent services with its business partners, AsiaPay’s management team of experts have teamed up with major players in the Internet and technology-based players in the region as shown in Figure 3 below. This alliance allows secure and integrated prepayment and micropayment platform solutions for a host of products and services in this industry including online ticketing, online shopping malls, gaming industries, digital content industries, mobile solutions, and prepaid services for various accounts and business applications.

Trying Harder through an Online Payment Gateway

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

“We try harder”.

That phrase is considered as the fifth most famous advertising slogan of all time and is associated with AVIS, the leading car rental company in the world. Since Warren Avis opened the first AVIS Airlines Rent A Car Systems outlet at Willow Run Airport in Detroit in 1946, that slogan was used not only as a marketing tool but is an open-ended promise of continual improvement – a commitment to do better than yesterday, everyday. This same concept catapulted AVIS into the international arena in 1965 and has achieved leadership in the car rental services 8 years later, and has retained this position ever since.

With a presence in 142 countries, AVIS brought this commitment of service to Philippine shores with AVIS Philippines, which quickly became the No.1 Car Rental services in the country. With a nationwide network of well-trained personnel, clients can make reservations at any location in the country and make use of their vehicles in another location. With the commitment for maintaining quality standards that was set by AVIS International, it is ensured that high quality service is met and received by all clients.

The Need for Online Services

Clients of AVIS Philippines are used to the protocol of booking their rentals by phone, get on their flight to their destination location, then pick up and pay for the rental car as soon as they arrive in their destinations. However, such a setup has certain limitations that make it not convenient for business people on the go.

In their commitment of achieving excellent and consistent customer service and delivering on their “We Try Harder” promise, AVIS Philippines has recently launched their improved website with an online payment gateway powered by PesoPay. Payment and booking options are much more flexible and convenient, with systems allowing online reservations and credit card payments.

Convenience is a Mouse Click Away

With AVIS Philippines new online reservations and payment gateway, world-class customer service is just a click away 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, backed with a 24/7 Helpdesk that can be contacted by any means possible from landlines, mobile phones, chat and email.

Making a Difference…. Online!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

“That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
you will think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world”

- From the song “Change the World” ©1996 Reprise Records
By Eric Clapton from the album “Phenomenon”

That song won the Grammys for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, and was ranked by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as one of the Songs of the Century. Hearing the words “change the world” could ignite the spark in most people’s heart to go out there and help change the world.

If they could, they would. But most people do not know how to.

People really do want to change the world. Just consider the 5 million supporters from 100 countries for the World Wildlife Fund. Since 1961, WWF has been in the forefront in stopping the degradation of Earth’s natural environment. In this way, people can help build a future for their children where they can live in harmony with nature.

WWF brought its experience as one of the world’s largest independent conservation organizations to the Philippines in 1969 when it helped protect the Philippine Eagle and other indigenous wildlife in this country. In 1988, WWF’s efforts in the Philippines grew when they facilitated the funding of conservation projects through the Debt of Nature Swap. Then in 1997 the Philippines officially became the 26th national organization for WWF and was locally known as Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas. Since then, various conservation projects were implemented to protect the world’s 10th most biologically diversified country. The efforts of WWF-Philippines are not only focused on wildlife preservation but also in addressing the top environmental issues facing the country.

However, the questions that arise include these: Are the citizens of this country aware of these efforts by WWF-Philippines? How can the Pinoy get involved in helping preserve his own environment?

When most Pinoys hear the word WWF, the first thing that comes to mind is professional wrestling. They haven’t had a clue as to the other meaning of the term WWF. While WWF-Philippines work with individuals, government, private companies and institutions for their involvement in biodiversity matters, many Pinoys are not aware that even an organization exists. Oh, some people do see the panda logo in malls and exhibits but would only look at it in passing. Some have probably seen Jackie Chan in some commercials about wildlife preservation saying, “When the buying stops, the killings can too.” Or they have probably heard his new Jacky Chan’s Café planning to open branches here in the Philippines with WWF as one of the main beneficiaries. Aside from that, their knowledge of WWF-Philippines is next to non-existent.

The Philippines is a country where 100% of the population can be found in one of the more than 7000 islands dotting the nation and most are within 100km from the sea. WWF-Philippines realized that all their efforts in helping save the environment will be for naught if the people themselves are not involved in making these changes. As stressed by WWF-Philippines, to save the Philippine environment, the Pinoy must be saved first.

WWF-Philippines is driving efforts to bring environmental awareness to the people. Working and collaborating through partnerships with individuals and organizations, as well as proper communication and environmental education are key components to these conservation efforts. With the globalization of the Filipino and the growing enthusiasm of Pinoys with the World Wide Web, WWF-Philippines is also making use of online strategies in reaching out to the Pinoy.
WWF-Philippines realize the Pinoy’s fascination with Social Networking. With Pinoys taking a huge chunk of the bandwidth operated by various social networks, involvement in such online communities is a powerful way of reaching out to the Filipino. WWF-International is paving the way by inviting visitors to their website to join any of the WWF Online Communities. In Facebook alone, WWF already has more than 145 thousand supporters, with 37 thousand joining the cause (target is 50,000). Still, this is a far cry from the more than 200 million Facebook members. Some rock stars and even porn stars have more fans in Facebook than what they have.

YouTube is another online force to reckon with millions of viewers watching billions of video every month. Still, the number of viewers and subscribers to WWF’s YouTube community pale in comparison with these figures or even to the millions of hits some non-sense flicks get so far. A lot of work is still needed to be done.

To start making a difference and help change the world, WWF-Philippines is inviting Pinoys to start taking action and making their contribution in saving the Philippines’ natural resources. Anyone, whether an individual, a company or an organization can join and all can help the cause of WWF by sharing your resources either in cash or in kind.

In this regard, WWF-Philippines have stepped up their efforts in soliciting donations from various sources to fund their projects and initiatives. Part of this is adding an online donation gateway on their website. People from around the world, Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike, can send their donations through this gateway and help WWF-Philippines with their conservation efforts. One time donations of P5000, P2000 or any other preferred amount can be given. If you prefer, recurring donations can also be given monthly at P500, P400, P200 denominations or whatever preferred amount you are committing to give. The default currency in the website is Philippine Peso, but anyone can give in any currency that their credit cards support. An XE Personal Currency Assistant is also provided to guide donors in computing the amount to give.

People and organizations can also contribute in kind by offering their time, skills, expertise, products and facilities to assist WWF-Philippines in their projects and initiatives. Volunteer opportunities abound for individuals who want to spend their time in a worthy cause. These opportunities include: Research activities (data accumulation and gathering, etc); Environmental Education; Communications (materials, PR Plans, campaign tools, etc); Membership (information database, trips and activities, recruiting new members, etc); Clerical (catalogs, encoding, library tasks, etc); other opportunities depending on immediate needs.

For companies embracing WWF’s thrusts, engaging in environmental efforts goes beyond philanthropy and shelling out various amounts per project. These environmental issues should also be part of their business strategies - for the environment is part of the core of any business. The environment is the source for products and materials. Protecting and preserving their sources of natural capital is for the company’s best interest. Companies can get involved through the: Conservation Alliance Program (CAP), Partners in Sustainable Growth (PSG) and Friends of WWF-Philippines (FOW).

A good example for corporate involvement in protecting the environment is Cebu Pacific’s (CEB) partnership for Bright Skies, a Carbon Footprint offsetting scheme that is popular in Western countries. In this program, CEB passengers are taking an active part by providing a contribution cost pre-computed from the estimated carbon dioxide emission of their flights, which will be included in the passenger’s overall flight cost. This amount will go to climate change adaptation projects like the Apo Reef in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.

The WWF-Philippines website also outlines other ways for everyday people to make a difference and contribute to the preservation of the environment. Simple acts like buying environmental friendly products during shopping, using energy and waste-saving measures, recycling as well as being responsible for the emissions that our transports are emitting can go a long way. Being responsible in the area we live in is also an important factor including taking immediate action and involving authorities for environmental related issues, simple organic gardening, and taking care not to harm the environment and natural resources during vacations and trips can make big impacts.

Getting involve in environmental consciousness everywhere we are or whatever we do can truly make a difference for our environment. A simple act of telling your “green” story or advocacy to the efforts of WWF-Philippines in blogs, social networks, and emails can be more beneficial in changing the world.

Starting with the Philippines - this country that we call home.
